Soundproofing Curtains For Home: Noise Proof Curtains And Media Room Curtains

When it comes to soundproofing curtains, or sound curtains, for your home, there are two distinct reasons why soundproof. First reason has to do with using soundproof curtains to keep the noise and sounds out of the room, and the second reason has to do with keeping the sound inside the room, and preventing it from leaving the room.

The two goals are accomplished with two different types of sound curtains, noise proof curtains and media room curtains. We will look at the qualities of each separately.

Are you looking to reduce the amount of noise coming to your room from the outside? Or would you like to keep your media room or your musical instrument practice room insulated and prevent the sound from leaking out? Regardless, you will find the information about what type of soundproof curtains to design and acquire right here.

Soundproof Curtains For Home - How To Choose And Install Noise Proof Curtains

Noise proof curtains come in handy when, due to the noise from the outside of the room, you are having difficulty falling asleep at home. Or, when you are working from home and are having trouble concentrating on the task at hand because of the noise. It could be that you live on a noisy street, or too close to the airport, or perhaps the neighbors got a new baby that lets everyone know they are hungry at odd times of the night.

The first thing to do is to establish where the noises are coming from. You need to sit down, close your eyes, and listen carefully to the sounds and noises. Often, the noise will mostly come from the windows, even if the windows are closed. Sometimes, the noise will come from the door. In these cases you need soundproofing curtains for windows or doors.

Once you have established the predominant source of noise, say, the window, it is important to keep in mind how sound propagates from the window to reach your ears. The sound can propagate directly, but it can also bounce from the objects and even bend around objects.

So knowing that, what kind of soundproof curtains will you pick to minimize the noise?

To prevent noise from travelling directly from the window, you need to place soundproof curtains that are made of thick material, the thicker the better. You will recognize such curtains by their weight. They will be heavy.

Also, if the light can pass through the curtains, chances are, the sound will, too. So the curtains should be opaque. Often, the thick, blackout type curtains will do.

To prevent the noise from bouncing from the curtain to the wall and back, you need to have curtains that maximize the sound absorption, thus minimize the bounce. Again, thick curtains can do that to a degree. But to eliminate even more of the sound bounce, you will want your curtain to be bigger, much bigger in size than the window, which is the source of noise. So pick the curtains that are ceiling to floor, and much wider than the window itself.

Coincidentally, such wide, thick, and tall curtains will also minimize the noise bending around the curtains and reaching the room that way.

Soundproofing Curtains For Home - Media Room Curtains And Musician's Practice Room Curtains

The media room curtains have a different role from the soundproofing curtains. They prevent the sound to leave the room. If you are a musician living in an apartment house, you certainly would not want to disturb your neighbors when practicing. Therefore, you want to equip your house with the musician's practice room curtains.

The secondary role of media room curtains is to facilitate the absorption of sound in the curtains, thereby reducing the unwanted sound reflections off the walls and the unwanted echoes. By reducing the echoes in your media room, you will allow the sound to come out of your sound system as intended by the producer of the movie or recording.

The media room soundproof curtains come in two principal forms. First, if you want to simply soundproof the entire room, you could pick curtains for the doors, windows, as described in the above section, or you could just provide curtains for all the walls of the room.

Second, for a musician, you could provide a frame on which you would hang the soundproof curtains. That frame would establish a room-within-the-room and would prevent much of the sound from even entering the room let alone leaving the room.

Just like the soundproof window curtains, described above, the media room curtains need to be massive, thick, and preferably go from wall to wall to maximize the sound absorption and minimize the sound loss from the room, either by going through the curtain, or around the curtain.
